Health Reform Boot Camp 2018

Are you prepared for the next wave of health reform?

President Trump claims that the tax bill that passed Congress and was signed into law around Christmas time "essentially repealed Obamacare" because it eliminates the individual mandate penalty starting in 2019. Without the Mandate, President Trump says that the Affordable Care Act is dead. Is he right?

We'll answer this question and many more during the 2018 edition of the Health Reform Boot Camp. We hope you can join us.

Two boys were out hiking when a bear came out of the woods. One boy immediately sat down and started putting on his tennis shoes. "What are you doing?" asked the other boy. "You can't outrun a bear." "I don't have to outrun the bear," the first boy replied. "I just have to outrun you."

In times of turbulence and confusion in the marketplace, brokers don't need to have all of the answers; they just need to know more than their competition.

It's Time for an Update!

4 Hours of CE to get you up to speed on the latest developments

Back in 2012, we put together a four-hour "health reform boot camp" to try to help brokers understand how health reform would change the way they do business. Hundreds of agents from across the state of Texas attended, and, considering that everything was up in the air at that point, we were pretty accurate with our predictions.

As federal regulators issued the rules and regulations to implement the ACA and the major provisions went into effect, we did an eight-hour Boot Camp in 2014 followed by another four-hour session in 2015. Again, hundreds of brokers attended, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

With the new president threatening to kill the cost-sharing subsidies, insurers debating whether to continue offering individual coverage or not, and lawmakers moving forward with their Obamacare repeal efforts, there was a lot of uncertainty in the market in 2017. Brokers were unsure what they should tell their clients and what changes they should make to keep their existing business and take advantage of any opportunities that may arise. In short, there was a lot to talk about in the 2017 boot camp.

Now it's 2018, and many of the fears we had when the Affordable Care Act was passed are actually coming true: premiums are skyrocketing, out-of-pocket limits are through the roof, carriers are leaving the market, and nobody seems to have any answers. What will brokers do if their clients decide insurance is no longer worth it -- and what can we do to keep that from happening? In the 2018 Boot Camp, we'll turn to the experts and try to get some answers to these questions. And, most importantly, we'll spend our time focusing on the solutions, not the problems.

Hands down, the most useful, interesting CE class I’ve ever attended. I love this because it is so relevant!

This class was helpful and very informative. Highly recommend! In a time when everyone seems to be freaking out, I appreciate the moderate presentation of facts to help brokers adapt and change.

Here are just a few of the things you'll learn

We'll start with a quick look at all of the big changes (and the impact of those changes) over the past 12 months, including the decision to stop paying the cost-sharing subsidies, the repeal of the individual mandate penalty, the postponement of the Cadillac tax, clarification on QSEHRAs, and regulations regarding short-term plans, association plans, and more.

It's getting harder and harder to help clients who purchase coverage in the individual market, but believe it or not there are still some innovative solutions you can recommend.

Small businesses, especially those with ACA metallic plans, have seen their premiums jump significantly over the past year, and that's causing some to re-think their benefits strategy. The good news is that there are still some great solutions for small employers, and brokers who are able to deliver those solutions will be rewarded with plenty of business in the months ahead.

For large employers, the mandate, employer reporting, and compliance remain big topics. We'll give an update on all three of those topics and discuss some strategies you can recommend to large employers.

It's an election year, and the last thing Republicans in Congress want to do is admit defeat right before the mid-terms. We can expect a number of legislative and regulatory changes this year as the party in power attempts to prove that it's "doing something" about health insurance costs. This means that we can expect another turbulent year, but we'll do our best to prepare you for the upcoming changes and even show you how they may create additional opportunities for brokers who are ready to capitalize on the changes.

About the Instructor

Hi, I'm Eric, the founder of and your instructor for the Health Reform Boot Camp. I've worked in the health insurance industry for more than 20 years and have been teaching continuing education classes since 2008. was founded just 6 days before the Affordable Care Act was signed into law.

During my insurance career, I've worked for insurance carriers, general agencies, and third party administrators. I'm also an active member of the National Association of Health Underwriters (and hope you are too).

This will be the fifth time in the past six years I've put together a Health Reform Boot Camp. I know 4 hours sounds like a long class, but I promise there's plenty of material to cover and the time will go by fast. I hope you enjoy the class.
